International Women’s Day: Celebrating Progress and Looking Ahead

Published 13 Mar 2025

Last Saturday marked International Women’s Day, a time to reflect on the progress we’ve made towards gender equity and, just as importantly, the work still ahead.

At Genomics, we've come a long way in building a more diverse and inclusive workplace. When David Thornton joined as our President, one of the key commitments made was to increase gender representation across the organisation. Since then, we’ve made real strides in making equity part of how we work every day. While there’s still more to do, we’re proud of the progress so far:

  • Stronger Female Leadership: Women in our C-Suite have increased from 16.7% in 2024 to 42.9% in 2025 an important step in breaking barriers at the highest levels.

  • Empowering Women in Leadership: Female representation at the Director level has grown from 75% to 88.9%, and across Directors and Above, women now hold 57% of senior leadership roles, up from 50% last year.

  • Building Balance Across All Levels: Female representation across the organisation has increased from 41.23% in 2024 to 46.1% in 2025, reinforcing our commitment to a more balanced workforce.

Numbers tell part of the story, but the real impact is felt in the experiences of the people who make Genomics what it is. Hear from some of the women at Genomics about what this means to them:

“Genomics is such a vibrant and energetic place to work. The passion from every single team member behind what we do is unrivalled. There’s a real sense of purpose in our mission, and the excitement is palpable when you’re with the team. Your ideas are heard, and your growth is genuinely encouraged.” – Tina Marshall, Director, Commercial Life Sciences

For many, the culture of collaboration and support has been key.

“Genomics is different from other companies I’ve worked at because of the great culture-everyone is warm, friendly, and always willing to help each other succeed. I love knowing that the work we do is making a positive impact on health and lives. – Phoebe Harland, Graduate Business Analyst

Beyond leadership and representation, the experience of working at Genomics is shaped by the support we provide one another.

“One thing I value about working at Genomics is how well-supported I am by my manager. Their ability to listen carefully and add insights from their own experience has helped me grow in areas where I still need guidance. That kind of leadership has a huge impact on my happiness at work.” – Abi Wood, Senior Software Engineer

And at its core, Genomics is a place where talented, ambitious individuals come together to do meaningful work.

“This is a place where very ambitious people come together to do great work. I especially value that we keep an eye out for each other to maintain a healthy work-life balance and aim to do serious science without taking ourselves too seriously.” – Mara Kopniczky, Scientific Developer

International Women’s Day is a reminder of the strides we’ve taken and the work that remains. But our commitment isn’t confined to a single day. At Genomics, we will continue to challenge barriers, champion diversity, and ensure that everyone, regardless of gender identity, ethnicity, or background, has the space to thrive and succeed.

Here’s to the future we’re building together 🚀
